The Assam unit of the Trinamool Congress has withdrawn its candidate from the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, protesting the Election Commission’s temporary freeze on the party’s name and traditional ‘flowers and grass’ symbol. The party had nominated educationist Abdul Salam for the October 6 contest.

The Election Commission’s interim arrangement follows a factional dispute over control of the party. Different names and symbols have been allotted temporarily while the dispute is considered. Assam TMC leaders said their withdrawal was a political protest against the commission’s decision.
