Biswanath police rescue three minors from Arunachal as trafficking investigation widens

Police in Assam’s Biswanath district have rescued three minors from Arunachal Pradesh as part of an expanding investigation into suspected trafficking and illegal placement of children, adding another cross-border dimension to a case that has already drawn scrutiny from child-protection authorities.

The latest recovery comes amid wider investigations in the region into networks allegedly involved in moving children between districts and states for placement in households or other arrangements outside established child-protection procedures.

Authorities are examining how the minors were transported, who facilitated their movement and whether proper consent and legal safeguards were followed. The investigation is also expected to look at the role of intermediaries who may have connected families, guardians or prospective employers.

Child trafficking cases in the Northeast can be particularly difficult to investigate because movement often occurs across district and state boundaries and may initially be presented as informal employment, education or care arrangements. Investigators therefore have to establish whether coercion, deception, exploitation or unlawful placement was involved in each case.

The rescue also follows a separate trafficking investigation in Arunachal Pradesh in which dozens of people, including children, were traced and recovered earlier this month. Police in that case said alleged facilitators were being investigated for their roles in transporting and placing victims.

The immediate priority after a rescue is to ensure the children are placed under appropriate protection and that their identities and welfare are safeguarded. Child Welfare Committees and district child-protection units typically become involved in assessing family circumstances and determining safe rehabilitation or reunification.

The Biswanath investigation remains underway, and further action will depend on statements from the rescued minors, documentary evidence and the identification of people involved in arranging their movement.
