Foreigners tribunal member arrested in Assam over alleged Rs 15,000 bribe demand

Police say the official was arrested after a complaint alleged he demanded money in connection with granting bail in a tribunal case.

A member of a foreigners tribunal in Assam’s Udalguri district has been arrested over an allegation that he demanded Rs 15,000 from a person in exchange for granting bail in a case. Police said an FIR had been registered at Mazbat Police Station following the complaint.

The accused, identified as Bhupen Chandra Pegu, was arrested on September 17 and booked under an extortion provision of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, according to police. The allegation remains subject to investigation and judicial process. Details of the underlying tribunal case and the complainant were not disclosed.
