The Gauhati High Court on September 18 began hearing arguments on the maintainability of a public interest litigation challenging the credibility and legal acceptability of electronic voting machines used in the 2026 Assam Assembly election. The petition was filed by opposition leaders.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar fixed November 4 for the next hearing on admissibility. The court has not ruled on the merits of the allegations. The case adds a judicial dimension to continuing political arguments over election technology and public confidence in the voting process.
