India-born cheetah gives birth to four cubs at Kuno National Park

An India-born cheetah at Kuno National Park has given birth to four cubs, marking a significant milestone in the country’s cheetah reintroduction programme. The mother, known as KGP12, was herself born in India to a cheetah brought from South Africa, making the litter part of the second generation born on Indian soil.

The births take India’s cheetah population to 56, according to the government. Project Cheetah began in 2022 with animals translocated from Africa and has since shifted from initial reintroduction toward breeding and establishing a sustainable population. Long-term success will depend on survival, habitat management, genetic diversity and expansion of viable landscapes.
