India ended the opening day of its Davis Cup second-round qualifying tie against South Korea trailing 0-2 after the hosts won both singles matches in Seoul.

Soonwoo Kwon and Hyeon Chung delivered the two victories for South Korea, each recovering from difficult moments to put the home side in control of the tie. India now needs a turnaround in the remaining matches to keep its qualification hopes alive.

The second-round qualifying ties determine the teams that advance to the Davis Cup final stage later in the season. Elsewhere, several contests remained closely balanced, while Canada opened a strong lead over France.

For India, the immediate challenge is to win the doubles and force the contest into the reverse singles. The tie resumes with little margin for error after South Korea’s clean sweep on day one.
