Two Assam residents were arrested after police intercepted vehicles on NH-6 in East Jaintia Hills and found a large consignment of cough syrup containing codeine.

Meghalaya Police have arrested two Assam residents after intercepting two vehicles on National Highway 6 and recovering 2,244 bottles of cough syrup that later tested positive for codeine. The vehicles were stopped at the Umkiang Police Patrol Post in East Jaintia Hills while travelling towards Silchar.
Police said the bottles were packed in 15 cartons. Both occupants were taken into custody and further investigation is underway into the origin, intended destination and circumstances surrounding the consignment. The seizure adds to continuing enforcement against the movement of controlled pharmaceutical substances across the region’s highway network.
