Election officials in Assam have found 18 of the 25 nomination papers filed for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll valid after scrutiny. Among the accepted candidates are nominees from the BJP, Congress and AIUDF, setting up a multi-cornered contest for the October 6 vote.

The final list will be known after the deadline for withdrawal of candidature. Counting is scheduled for October 9. The bypoll follows former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi’s move to the BJP and subsequent election to the Assam Assembly, leaving the parliamentary seat vacant.
