OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman is expected to brief the United Nations Security Council as governments increase their focus on the geopolitical and security implications of artificial intelligence. The appearance comes during a period of intense debate over the pace of frontier-model development and the adequacy of international safeguards.

AI has moved quickly from a technology-policy issue into questions of national security, military use, cyber risk and global economic power. A Security Council discussion gives governments a forum to consider how rapidly advancing systems could affect conflict, stability and international cooperation, even as countries compete to build their own AI capabilities.
