Opposition parties have rallied behind Mamata Banerjee after the Election Commission temporarily froze the All India Trinamool Congress name and its traditional election symbol amid a factional dispute. Congress and other opposition leaders sharply criticised the development and accused the BJP of benefiting from institutional pressure on rivals.

The BJP has rejected the allegations and pointed to the internal dispute within the Trinamool Congress. The Election Commission’s order is interim, with competing factions assigned temporary names and symbols while the larger question of organisational control is examined. The row is likely to remain politically significant ahead of upcoming by-elections.
