Punjab Police ASI shot dead during night patrol in Amritsar

Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh of the Amritsar Commissionerate Police was shot dead while on night patrol near the Bhagtanwala grain market, police said. Unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire in the early hours, critically injuring the officer before he died in hospital.

Investigators have secured the area and are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the attackers and establish a motive. The Punjab government announced Rs 1 crore in ex gratia assistance for the officer’s family, while an additional insurance payment is expected under his banking cover.
