US President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping Russia sanctions bill into law, increasing economic pressure on Moscow over the war in Ukraine. The legislation targets Russia’s energy and defence sectors as well as the so-called shadow fleet of tankers used to move oil around existing restrictions.

The law also provides for tariffs affecting some of Russia’s largest trading partners, giving the measure consequences beyond direct US-Russia commerce. Supporters say the goal is to reduce revenue available for Moscow’s war effort, while critics warn that broad tariff powers could create uncertainty for countries with significant Russian trade links.
