Two arrested after filmmaker Dominic Sangma assaulted near Jote

Two men have been arrested in connection with the alleged assault on National Award-winning filmmaker Dominic Sangma near Jote on the outskirts of Itanagar, police said on September 18.

The incident occurred along the Jollang–Rakap road after Sangma reportedly intervened during a confrontation involving students from the Film and Television Institute of India campus at Jote. Police said he was allegedly attacked with bamboo sticks after trying to protect the students.

Sangma, who is from Meghalaya and heads the screenwriting department at the Jote campus, was taken for medical attention after the incident. The arrests followed the registration of a police case and demands for action from members of the film and student communities.

The case has drawn attention across the Northeast because of Sangma’s standing in independent cinema and the concerns raised about safety around the institute. Further investigation is continuing.
